DID YOU KNOW...

Geography

Lloydminster's downtown encompasses approximatly 50.0 hectares (124.0 acres) directly north of the intersection of Highway 17 and 16. Highway 17 divides the dowtown into two provinces; Alberta and Saskatchewan. It was developed using a traditional street grid pattern and adjacent to two major fully developed residential neighbourhoods; West Lloydminster and East Lloydminster.

History

On August 22, 1929 a fire raged across the downtown destroying virtually everything in its path. Most buildings were made of wood and thus were susceptible to the ravages of fire. The business district of Lloydminster, Saskatchewan was virtually lost to the fire, but the Lloydminster, Alberta business district was left mostly untouched. On the Saskatchewan side, only a few buildings survived, one being the post office (currently Ernie’s Coffee House 5001-50 Ave). Most of the businesses stricken by this disaster recovered. One upside to the fire was that it pushed ahead the amalgamation of the two Lloydminsters into one town.
